You were —
As a bird
That loved to eat
From the palm of my hand
A butterfly I could easily coax
To perch with delicate grace
Upon my finger’s slender branch
Yet I can sense the wind
Gathering ‘neath your wings
The palpable frisson
Of your zeal to leave my side
And I cannot hold you back
Though I’d want to keep you near
Deeply tethered
Til you change your mind
But
I’ll let you go
With pained reluctance
I’ll let you roam free
Beyond the sky that separates
Yet connects us
To find your way
And perhaps one day
When the sun
Touches the moon
We’ll cross paths again
Older
And hopefully
A little wiser
