Hiding Place

Choked on flushes of red
Flooding beyond asphalt lips
To its fertile core
The earth groans
With tears of the sun
Embittered on the shallows
Of innocence lost
And the moon
Cannot spread her thick veil
Quickly enough
To hide the open gaze
Of hapless stars
As death devours
The vulnerable
The weak
The unsuspecting
Like a beast –
Jaws drenched in crimson
Mercilessly tearing
Through veins and tendons
Of its dying prey –
And in the midst
Of this endless carnage
Nostrils filled
With the stench of decay
I wish
It were possible
To crawl back within the nucleus
Where the world had been
A pocketed marble
Of eternal sunshine…
I’d have never left
That maternal chrysalis
Where evil
Could never find me.
